Bigger Tile Can Be Better: The Benefits

Large-format porcelain tile has become an increasingly popular choice in both residential and commercial design. A few good reasons are installation jobs with fewer grout joints, a more continuous visual surface, and the ability to replicate natural stone, concrete, and other material very well. Larger tile sizes can completely transform the way a space looks and feels.

While 12” x 24” remains one of the most widely used and versatile porcelain tile sizes across the U.S., stepping up to large-format options such as 24” x 48” and 48” x 48” creates an entirely different visual effect. Larger tiles allow the surface itself to take center stage, especially with stone-look porcelain where the larger formats can showcase the veining, movement, and subtle variations with fewer grout lineinterruptions.

A common misconception is that large-format tile is reserved for large spaces. In fact to the contrary, it can be especially effective in smaller rooms. Using a 24” x 48” tile in a bathroom, powder room, or compact living area reduces the number of grout lines that visually divide the floor or wall. The result is a cleaner, more continuous surface that actually creates a greater sense of expansiveness in a small space.

Fewer grout joints also mean less grout to maintain and clean. This added practical benefit in kitchens, bathrooms, showers, and other hardworking areas of the home is precious. Large-format porcelain can also travel beautifully from floors onto walls, thereby creating a sophisticated, cohesive look and making it an excellent choice for modern, contemporary, and transitional showers and feature walls.

Of course, as tile sizes increase, proper installation becomes vital. Large-format tile requires a flat, properly prepared substrate, appropriate setting materials, and an experienced installer (many times requiringat least two) familiar with large-format porcelain to achieve the best results.

Whether you choose the familiar proportions of a 12” x 24”, move up to a 24” x 48”, or make a dramatic statement with 48” x 48”s, scale is an important part of tile design. Sometimes, choosing a larger format is the best way to make a space feel cleaner, more seamless, and surprisingly larger in one shot.
